Our Environment

Climate change is having a damaging effect on global coffee production. It can result in lower yields, higher production costs and poorer quality coffee cherries. We have seen the impact of these first-hand, with drastic consequences for our producer partners. This is why Matthew Algie has taken a proactive approach to address climate change in every relevant area of our operations.

  • We’re reusing, refurbishing and recycling machines, parts and packaging where we can.
  • We’re increasing the number of electric vehicles in our fleet.
  • We are committed to procuring deforestation-free products and supporting the prevention of illegal deforestation across our supply chains by 2030.
  • In 2018, together with One Carbon World we measured and offset our carbon emissions at our Glasgow roastery and became carbon neutral. We were the first roaster in the world to achieve their Carbon Neutral International Standard as a result. Since then we have broadened our horizons and challenged ourselves to achieve net zero ahead of UK & Scotland Government targets. By 2035, we will be net zero across our own operations and by 2040, we will be net zero across our entire value chain. Our Net Zero by 2040 roadmap is available in our latest Sustainability Report.
  • We were delighted to win the “Green Champion” Award at the Glasgow Business Awards in 2022
