Coffee Industry Insights, Coffee Sourcing
Matthew Algie recently signed up to the "Adapt Now" initiative, set up by "Twin" the ethical trading organisation, to tackle water shortages in smallholder farms in Peru.
Together with Marks & Spencer we will be supporting one of our Peruvian suppliers, the San Juan del Oro Cooperative, in adapting to climate change. Rainfall in the region is already becoming increasingly erratic and temperatures are expected to rise by up to 2ºC over the next 50 years, putting future supply at risk from heat, water stress and increased pests.
To tackle water stress at the farm-level, we will be working with General Manager Mateo Quispe to protect water sources, install coffee processing infrastructure to conserve water, and develop a family awareness campaign on responsible water use. The programme will also support the cooperative in gaining Rainforest Alliance Climate Change certification, adding further value to the crop.
Stay tuned for a full report in July, when we will be visiting Mateo at the cooperative to see how things are progressing. In the meantime you can read all about the project on the Adapt Now website.
