Sustainability is, and always has been, a core principle of how we do business at Matthew Algie. Our approach starts with coffee and our commitment to be a dependable partner for the farmers in our supply chains, many of whom operate in environmentally, socially or economically challenging contexts.

Beyond this, our commitment to sustainability permeates the way we source other products, and ensures that we continually pursue reductions in our environmental impact, create a better place to work and meaningfully invest back into our coffee community.

Our Sustainability 5 Year Plan (2017-2021)

Our first Sustainability Report shares the development of our strategic plan and our ambitions for the next five years. Our intention is to deepen the impact of the work that we do and improve the way that we communicate this with stakeholders in the future.

The report is also a chance to reflect on our progress to date and celebrate some of the key milestones we’ve achieved on our journey – from launching the UK’s first Fairtrade certified espresso back in 1997 to winning the 2Degrees Award for our collaborative project with the San Juan del Oro cooperative in 2015.

Our Latest Sustainability Report

Our latest report summarises our progress so far against our five-year plan.

In this year’s report we’re thrilled to share full details of how we’ve achieved net zero carbon emissions and signed up to the UN’s Climate Neutral Now Initiative. We have also launched dairy-free milk and compostable cups in the Espresso Warehouse catalogue, and further stepped up our engagement with young people by offering work experience equivalent to 2% of our workforce.

From a coffee sourcing perspective, we focus on the impact of our collaborations with coffee suppliers in Peru and Uganda, where we’ve been working in partnership on themes such as sustainable agriculture, encouraging young people into coffee and gender equality.
