No contest: Joe and Dawn
Reade of The Island Bakery have the best jobs
in the UK.
First of all, they live on
the island of Mull, which is about the same size
as Greater London, but blissfully peaceful with
just 3,000 people. Secondly, they make the most
incredible organic biscuits known to humanity.
It's a family thing. Joe's
parents own a neighbouring farm, producing their
famous Isle of Mull Cheddar. Around three years
ago, Dawn and Joe were baking bread which they
sold throughout the island. Looking to diversify,
they hit on the idea of original recipe organic
biscuits. And then some.

We talked to Joe around early 2003,
with the idea of getting them to supply us with catering
packs - rather than the tube packs they sell in the
likes of Harvey Nichols. Now we're the sole food service
distributor for the UK.
And the products? Words don't really
do justice - but our favourites are the Lemon Melts
and Chocolate Gingers (with a chunk of crystallised
stem ginger nestling in the middle). In fact, the Oat
Crumbles and shortbread are pretty great too.
OK - so that's the entire appetite-ravaging
range.
But don't just take our word that
these are seriously tasty biscuits. They've also picked
up a clutch of awards along the way, including Great
Taste Award gold, silver and bronze medals - as well
as being winners at the organic food awards.
It's also worth noting they're British
Retail Consortium certified - so their bakery is top
notch.
Dunk them at your peril.
